Aug 16, 2025

Washington [US], August 16: At 5:55 a.m. on August 16 (Vietnam time), President Trump and President Putin began their joint press conference. Mr. Trump walked up to his podium first and raised his hand to introduce Mr. Putin. The Russian President then began his speech first.
President Putin said first
President Putin thanked President Trump for inviting him to the summit and said the meeting was constructive. Regarding the location of the meeting, Mr. Putin said Alaska was a suitable place to hold it. Saying that Russia and the United States are close neighbors, he recalled that the two countries had fought common enemies and that this legacy would help both sides in the future. "The past period was very difficult in the relationship between the two sides. It is necessary to overcome the situation," Mr. Putin said.
Referring to the content of the meeting, President Putin said Ukraine was one of the main topics. "We see President Trump's desire to understand the nature of the conflict. All root causes must be eliminated and all concerns of Russia must be considered. I agree with President Trump that Ukraine's security must be guaranteed," he said, expressing hope that mutual understanding will bring peace to Ukraine.
In addition, the Russian President said that he hopes Ukraine and Europe "will not try to sabotage the dialogue".
Regarding the Russia-US relationship, President Putin said that the investment partnership between the two countries has great potential. He thanked President Trump for his cooperation and friendly words during the meeting. "I hope that today's agreements will be the starting point for restoring relations between Russia and the US," he said.
President Putin also said that the conflict in Ukraine would not have happened if Mr. Trump had been the US President.
Remarks by President Trump
President Trump said the two had a very constructive meeting with many points agreed upon, some major points not yet reached, but some progress made.
"So there's no deal until there's a deal. I'll be calling NATO in a little while, I'll be calling various people as I think appropriate, and of course, calling President Zelensky of Ukraine and telling him about today's meeting. Ultimately, the decision is up to them. They'll have to agree to what Marco and Steve and some of the great people from the Trump administration who have come here, Scott and John Radcliffe, thank you very much," Trump said.
The US President also had kind words for Russian businesses that want to do business with the US and said he wanted to resolve the issue.
"I've always had a great relationship with President Putin. We've had a lot of difficult meetings, but we've had a lot of good meetings. We've been influenced by the 'Russia, Russia, Russia' hoax. That makes it a little bit harder to deal with, but he understands. I think he's probably seen the same thing throughout his career. He's seen it all, but we have to accept the 'Russia, Russia, Russia' hoax," Trump said.
The White House chief said there would be a good chance of ending the difficulties in resolving business issues and issues that both sides want.
"So, in short, I'm going to start calling and telling them what happened. But we had an extremely productive meeting, and a lot of things were agreed upon. There's very little left. Some are not very important. Some are probably the most important, but we had a very good chance of getting there. We didn't get there, but we had a very good chance of getting there. I want to thank President Putin and his entire team, people that I know, in many cases, I see in the press all the time," Trump said.
The US President called for the most productive meeting now. "We're going to stop thousands of people being killed every week, and President Putin wants to see that as much as I do, so again, Mr. President, I want to thank you very much, and we'll talk soon and we'll probably meet again soon," Mr. Trump concluded.
Shortly after, President Putin suggested that the next meeting would be in Moscow. Mr. Trump said it sounded interesting, but did not immediately accept, only saying that it could happen.
The two leaders ended the press conference quickly without answering questions from reporters.
According to CNN, less than an hour after the press conference, Russian President Putin was seen boarding the plane. Just before stepping onto the plane's stairs, he turned back to wave and bow.
Before boarding the plane, President Putin laid flowers at the graves of Soviet soldiers at Fort Richardson Memorial Cemetery. The Kremlin said the graves commemorate Soviet pilots and sailors who died transporting equipment from the US to the Soviet Union during World War II.
The talks between the two Russian and American leaders took place in Alaska, lasting about 2 hours and 30 minutes in the early morning of August 16, Vietnam time, attracting the attention of Ukraine and many countries around the world, with the conflict in Ukraine being the focus.
