Top European officials make new visit to Tunisia for migration deal

Jul 17, 2023

Tunis [Tunisia], July 17: Senior European officials on Sunday made their second visit in a month to Tunisia, a major route for migrants, to discuss closer cooperation on irregular migration. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Italian Prime Minister GiorgiaMeloni held renewed talks with President Kais Saied as the number of migrants departing from Tunisia and trying to reach Europe has significantly increased in recent months.
Tunisia's state news agency TAP reported that Saied and the three visiting officials attended a ceremony for the signing of a memorandum of understanding about "strategic and comprehensive" partnership between Tunisia and the EU. Last month, the three officials visited Tunisia and the European Commission said at the time it was supporting Tunisia with an aid package of up to $967.8mn as the North African country is roiled by economic woes and rising numbers of migrants using it as a launchpad to Europe.
