Death toll rises in Philippines building collapse

May 26, 2026

Manila [Philippines], May 26: The death toll from the collapse of a nine-storey building under construction in the Philippines has risen to four, with 16 others still missing and feared trapped under the rubble, local emergency officials said on Monday.
The building collapsed on Sunday in the village of Balibago in Angeles City, around 80 kilometres north of the capital Manila.
Most of those killed or missing were construction workers, city spokesman Jay Pelayo said. Several people were rescued with minor injuries, while nearly a dozen others managed to free themselves from the rubble.
The fatalities included a 65-year-old Malaysian national who lived in a nearby building that was buried when the structure collapsed.
The three other fatalities were construction workers who were pulled from the rubble on Monday morning, according to Pelayo.
It had rained heavily in the area in the hours leading up to the accident. However, according to authorities, it is still unclear whether this caused the collapse of the building, a planned hotel-condominium complex.
