Two dead, 49 injured in violence at Syria wedding

Beirut [Lebanon], June 2: Clan violence at a wedding in war-torn Syria left two dead including a child, and 49 others injured, a monitoring group said on Thursday.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights added that a dispute between people from two rival clans in Syria's central province of Homs at the wedding developed on Wednesday night into a clash involving hand grenades and gunfire.
The violence involving members of the al-Akidat and al-Hadidin clans was due to an unspecified old dispute, the British-based observatory said.
The monitor attributed such incidents in Syria to a security breakdown and proliferation of weapons in areas of the country controlled by the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
In March 2011, many Syrians took to the streets in protests against al-Assad's rule inspired by the so-called Arab Spring uprisings.
In response, the government forces used excessive power to quell the protests, which soon evolved into a civil war that engulfed the whole country.
Thanks to military support from Russia and Iran, about two-thirds of Syria is once again under al-Assad government's control.
