Monsoon rain expected to worsen floods in parts of Thailand

Bangkok [Thailand], September 16: A new round of seasonal monsoon rain is set to hit many parts of Thailand, which had been badly affected by previous floodings from record rainfall.
The Office of the National Water Resources on Thursday issued a flood warning in 24 provinces for Sept. 17-21 caused by heavy rain in these areas.
The northern, northeastern, central and eastern Thailand will be mainly affected. The office also alerted relevant authorities to closely monitor the situation, due to the risk of water levels rising quickly and exceeding reservoir capacities.
The Bangkok, although not among the 24 provinces on alert, is still at risk of flooding as the Chao Phraya River flows through the city.
According to local media, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is prepared to declare six sub-districts in the capital as natural disaster zones, where over 10,000 households and 2,000 farming lands have been severely affected by flooding.
To better cope with potential further floodings, the authorities are now paying close attention to areas that have accumulated more than 90 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period, as well as areas that have regularly experienced waterlogging and flooding in the past.
