Lebanese central bank chief says to return people's deposits soon amid dollar crisis

Jun 04, 2021

Beirut (Lebanon), June 4: Lebanon's Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh said on Thursday that people's deposits in Lebanese banks are safe and will be returned soon, the National News Agency reported.
Salameh's remarks came following his meeting with President Michel Aoun to discuss latest financial developments in the country.
Lebanon has been suffering a severe shortage of U.S. dollars for more than a year, prompting banks to halt withdrawals in U.S. dollar and restrict withdrawals in Lebanese pound.
Protesters took to the Lebanese streets on Wednesday, demanding the banks return their deposits in dollar and threatening to file lawsuits against the central bank and commercial banks.
